EPB Fiber Optics Announces Internet Speed Increase

Chattanooga, TN (February 1, 2019) – EPB Fiber Optics has tripled its most popular internet speed at no additional cost. Residential customers who subscribed to the company’s 100 Mbps starting internet speed have been upgraded to 300 Mbps with no increase in the price, which remains $57.99 per month. At the same time, EPB is adjusting the price of its residential 1-Gigabit Fi-Speed internet from $69.99 to just $67.99 per month (bundle discounts still apply). As a result, starting-speed customers can now upgrade to The Gig for just $10 more per month, while more than 15,000 current Gig customers will enjoy even better internet value. The changes take effect immediately.

According to David Wade, the speed increase and price adjustment are driven by EPB’s mission to enhance quality of life and the local economy in the Chattanooga area. “EPB continually strives to keep our community on the leading edge by delivering innovative solutions with world-class infrastructure,” said Wade. “Providing even more bandwidth and internet value is our way making sure our customers get the most from on-line opportunities for education, work, entertainment, and healthcare, particularly as they add more smart devices and appliances.”

Studies by SNL Kagan show that average U.S. households already have more than a dozen internet-connected devices such as gaming consoles, smart phones, tablets, PC’s, thermostats, doorbells, security cameras, smart TV’s, streaming media devices and more. Some experts predict the average smart devices per household will triple in the next few years.

“Just as the internet changed the way we send and receive information, it is now transforming the way we live with smart home automation and technology-driven healthcare options,” said Wade. “The Gig is the best internet value available because it has the bandwidth to support many devices operating at the same time.”

EPB’s announcement marks the fourth speed increase Fi-Speed internet customers have enjoyed since it launched fiber optics services ten years ago. The new download and upload speeds will remain symmetrical (300Mbps download/upload). In addition to the 300 Mbps and The Gig services, EPB remains the only provider to offer residential 10-Gigabit Fi-Speed Internet service, which continues to be available for $299.00.

EPB Fiber Optics has been working behind the scenes for months to enhance its equipment in preparation for this speed increase. While most basic residential Fi-Speed customers can now enjoy 300 Mbps speeds, work will continue as quickly as possible to replace the remaining legacy equipment at some customer homes.

EPB continues to offer all of its Fiber Optics services with no data caps, installation fees or contracts. EPB’s local Customer Service Representatives are available 24/7/365 to answer questions, schedule upgrades and provide support at (423) 648-1372.

About EPB

Established as an independent board of the City of Chattanooga in 1935, EPB is a municipally-owned utility that provides electric power and fiber optic communications services as a means of promoting economic development and enhancing quality of life across the local area.

EPB serves more than 170,000 homes and businesses in a 600 square-mile area that includes greater Chattanooga, as well as parts of surrounding counties and areas of North Georgia.

In 2010, EPB became the first provider in the United States to deliver up to 1 Gig (1,000 mbps) internet speeds utilizing a community-wide fiber optic network that provides access to every home and business in its service area. In 2015, EPB became the first, and to date, only American ISP to make up to 10 Gig (10,000 mbps) internet speeds accessible to all of its residential and commercial customers as a standard offer.

EPB has also utilized its community-wide fiber optic network to deploy the most advanced and highly automated smart grid power management system in the nation. In recognition of EPB’s groundbreaking infrastructure, the Department of Energy and Oak Ridge National Laboratory are utilizing EPB’s smart grid as a national model for researching and developing best practices. EPB is also the first major power distribution utility to earn the USGBC’s PEER certification for having a highly automated, modernized electric power grid.
