Inspiring students to protect and improve their community.
Today’s students are tomorrow’s caretakers. So, it is imperative we find exciting ways to fire their passion for stewardship. Through innovative programs and local partnerships, we’re encouraging young people to explore how they can help protect the resources we all depend on—building a stronger, more resilient future for our community.
Through this exciting program, hundreds of students have taken the challenge to design and build electric-powered race cars. Working with green spaces and STEM schools, we’re helping prepare local students for the tech jobs of tomorrow by providing access to our expertise in engineering and EV technology. The ultimate test of the students’ work is held at Volkswagen Chattanooga, where they get the thrill of racing their creations.
Teaming EPB Energy Pros with students and teachers, School Uplift saves schools an average of 10% on their energy bills each year. Schools that complete the program earn $10,000 to reinvest in their campus — with students helping decide how the dollars are used. From more efficient lighting to upgraded HVAC systems to energy-smart habits, students get a front-row seat to the impact of changes big and small. Along the way, they learn the importance of stewardship — how saving energy protects resources, reduces pollution, and builds a more resilient community. With nearly $1 million awarded so far, School Uplift is much more than a school project. It’s a launchpad for future leaders in energy and stewardship.
Ivy Academy is a tuition-free charter school emphasizing education in the natural sciences. At EPB, we’re helping prepare these students for their careers, while also doing good for our community.
Together, we’re restoring EPB powerline right-of-ways to their natural beauty and purpose. With hands-in-the-dirt help from students, we’re planting wildflowers and other native species that feed butterflies, birds, and bees—critical pollinators who can boost crop yields and help sustain the healthy groundcover that reduces runoff. Native plants also help EPB deliver energy more reliably, by crowding out invasive species which interfere with power lines. With the continued help of students, we work to restore as much land as possible to its natural state, benefiting the power grid, pollinators, and people.
