Hot water heating accounts for 90% of the energy your washing machine uses, so washing clothes in cold water can save more than $40 annually. And, saving 15 minutes of drying time per load can save up to $34 a year. Plus, a 10-minute shower uses 5 gallons less hot water than filling up a bathtub. Lowering your water heater’s thermostat to 120°F provides plenty of hot water and saves energy. And, installing low-flow shower heads can wash away up to $145 in energy costs each year.
